SAMSUNG's HDD business was launched in 1988 and started mass producing the Voyager 3200 series, the first product with 3.2 GB of recording density in the world's HDD industry, in June 1998. The products came in two types: 3.2 GB and 6.4 GB, quite an achievement considering the world's HDD leaders, like Seagate and Quantum, were manufacturing products with 2.5-2.8 GB densities. The Voyager 3200 series has greatly improved data transmission speed with a minimized noise level. Its self-diagnosis function alerts users if a malfunction is detected during self-monitoring. This was the result of SEC's on-going efforts to narrow its technical gap with the world leaders. After it launched its 40MB HDD in 1989, SEC set up a research center in Silicon Valley, and opened up the Kumi Manufacturing Site dedicated to HDD production and equipped with hi-tech facilities in 1996. All this helped SEC make successful advances into the world market and establish itself as the 6th largest manufacturer in the HDD industry for desktop PCs.
