After Effects Workstation FAQ

Q: I'm thinking of moving from Mac to PC. Can you help?
A: Absolutely! All of our systems come with Lifetime Technical Support! If you have any questions ever or need any assistance we will gladly walk you through the entire way!

Q: Do any of your systems support Thunderbolt?
A: Of course! Our workstations all come with High RAM Capacity and naturally support Thunderbolt. They even support the latest version of Thunderbolt without any issues.

Q: Does having more CPU cores improve After Effects performance? Should I get a dual Xeon system?
A: Absolutely. The power from your Dual Xeon CPU’s adds to the performance for any kind of rendering software. The Xeon processors used to be a must, overtime the graphics card has played a larger factor in the system. We supply dual CPU’s for you by default because we like to pull out all the stops for any occasion and rendering is one of those things that is definitely needy of core count. The combination of our High Core Xeon Processors and elite graphics cards will provide the best performance for you guaranteed.

Q: Do I need a GPU? Is GeForce OK or should i use Quadro?
A: GPU acceleration is fairly new to After Effects and only a limited number of effects are supported. However, utilizing the GPU is something Adobe has recently been focusing on so we anticipate that many more effects will be accelerated in the future. Between GeForce and Quadro, either type of card should work great. We choose based on what will be the most compatible with the system itself however if you have a preference please let us know and well gladly make the switch for you!

Q: How much system RAM do I need?
A: Depending on the length, resolution, and complexity of your projects, After Effects can often benefit from having very large amounts of RAM available. Larger amounts of RAM allows AE to store more previews in RAM rather than on a cache disk which can result in smoother playback. Using a fast SSD as your cache drive can mitigate some of the performance loses, but no hard drive or SSD is as fast as RAM. In general, we recommend 64GB of RAM unless your projects are relatively simple or you are just learning to use After Effects. If you work with very complex projects, however, our "High RAM Capacity" workstation allows for 128GB of RAM.

Q: Should I use an SSD for my disk cache?
A: Yes! SSDs are much faster than traditional hard drives and in many cases can be noticeably faster than the older style drives. Using a dedicated SSD for your disk cache can significantly improve performance when playing and scrubbing through compositions. We usually recommend using an SSD for the Main OS and applications and then a large regular hard drive for your long-term storage. That is also how we design our configurations as well

Q: Do I need to use a Quadro card or is GeForce/Titan OK?
A: Either type of card should work great in Premiere Pro, but for most users a GeForce card is the better option. They are much more affordable are able to match performance of the Quadro cards for fraction of the cost. However, there are two main benefits to using a Quadro video card - they support 10-bit displays and we have found them to be a bit more reliable long-term.

Q: How much system RAM do I need?
A: The amount of RAM you need is going to depend on the resolution, length, and complexity of your timelines. However, as a general rule of thumb we recommend 32GB if you work with 1080p footage, 64GB for 4K footage, and 128GB for 6K or 8K footage. All of our systems support up to 128GB of RAM!

3ds Max Workstation FAQ

Q: What do I need for the best modeling and animation performance in 3ds Max?
A: Modeling and animation in 3ds Max are primarily single-threaded, so you want a CPU with the highest possible clock speed - but core count is not particularly important. A good video card is also needed, in order to smoothly display the 3D graphics you create.

Q: Does rendering in 3ds Max require different hardware?
A: Rendering always requires a higher core count. No matter what software! It would be ideal to go with a high core count system over a low core count system to take advantage of this feature.

Q: What about combining design, animation, and rendering? Can one system do well with all of them?
A: As discussed above, for rendering you will want a high core count CPU. In the past, higher core counts usually meant lower clock speeds - but Intel offers a 1600 series of Intel Xeon Processors which we use for these builds that take advantage of both a high core count and high speed as well. So you will get the best of both worlds!

Q: Should I use an SSD?
A: Yes! SSDs are much faster than traditional hard drives and in many cases can give a noticeable decrease in the time it takes to open and save files - not to mention simply starting Windows and launching 3ds Max itself.

Q: Do I need to use a Quadro card or is GeForce okay?
A: 3ds Max needs a fairly powerful video card, unless you are exclusively rendering, and Autodesk's official stance is that Quadro cards are certified for this application. We tend to use Quadro Cards in these configurations for long term reliability and compatibility for this software.

Q: What about multiple video cards, is there any use for those?
A: 3ds Max does not directly benefit from multiple GPUs (video cards), but if you use a third party rendering engine like Octane or FurryBall then those do utilize the GPU... and they scale very well with multiple cards.

DaVinci Resolve Workstation FAQ

Q: I'm thinking of moving from Mac to PC. Can you help?
A: Absolutely! All of our systems come with Lifetime Technical Support! If you have any questions ever or need any assistance we will gladly walk you through the entire way!

Q: Do any of your systems support Thunderbolt?
A: Of course! Our workstations all come with High RAM Capacity and naturally support Thunderbolt. They even support the latest version of Thunderbolt without any issues.

Q: Will these systems work for the Free Edition of Resolve?
A: From a hardware perspective, the main limitation of the free edition is that is only supports a single GPU. Either of our Resolve workstations should work great for the free edition of Resolve, just don't waste your budget on multiple GPUs that you will not be able to use.

Q: Does having more CPU cores improve DaVinci Resolve performance? Should I get a dual Xeon system?
A: Absolutely. The power from your Dual Xeon CPU’s adds to the performance for any kind of rendering software. The Xeon processors used to be a must, overtime the graphics card has played a larger factor in the system. We supply dual CPU’s for you by default because we like to pull out all the stops for any occasion and rendering is one of those things that is definitely needy of core count. The combination of our High Core Xeon Processors and elite graphics cards will provide the best performance for you guaranteed.

Q: How many GPUs should I use?
A: This varies based on the resolution, codec, and complexity of your color correction. Basic color correction/grading should be just fine with a single mid-range card like a GTX 1080. However, for more complex work we recommend using either two GTX 1080 Ti GPUs or a single Titan V. Depending on the resolution and complexity of your grading ( especially with things like TNR), you may find an increase in performance all the way up to four GTX 1080 Ti or there Titan V video cards. However, in our testing four Titan V GPUs did not show a significant benefit in any of the real-world testing we have performed.

Given the fact that you can hit peak performance with three GPUs, we currently do not offer a stock configuration for four GPU. If your workflow is one you know will benefit from four GPUs, we do have several workstation options - simply contact us for special quoting.

Q: Can I manually select which GPU(s) to use if I have multiple cards?
A: Yes! to do so, go to "Preferences", then "Hardware Configuration" under the "System" tab. You need to set the "GPU processing mode" to either OpenCL or CUDA (we highly recommend using CUDA if using an NVIDIA GPU), then change the "GPU selection mode" to manual. Once that is done you should be able to select which GPU(s) you want Resolve to use.

Note that while this can be configured on both the free and Studio versions of Resolve, the free edition will still only use a single card even if multiple are selected.

Q: Do I need to use a Quadro card or is GeForce OK?
A:DaVinci Resolve needs a fairly powerful video card, unless you are exclusively rendering, and Autodesk's official stance is that Quadro cards are certified for this application. We tend to use Quadro Cards in these configurations for long term reliability and compatibility for this software.

Q: How much system RAM do I need?

Q: Should I use an SSD for my project files?
That is also how we design our configurations as well.

Q: Can I use Linux instead of Windows?
A: With the latest DaVinci software we found that Windows is the better choice over using Linux. Part of their system requirements is to use Windows 10 however if you would like us to install Linux, that is always an option!
